Thanks for your interest, Max! The package was developed internally, by myself. I'll be releasing the software to the community in the next couple months. In the meantime, please check back often or give me a heads-up, and I'll send you an email when it's complete! Thanks again! :)

"I’ve whipped up a file downloader that helps me track how often the Jeweltopia demo is downloaded ..."

I'm interested in such a tool. What tool are you using?

[...] In a recent post, I explored some surprising statistics about my visitors — casual gamers — and the utter lack of dial-up subscribers in the bunch. A little more than 4% of my visitors successfully downloaded a full 4.72 MB demo with a dial-up connection, and only the smallest fraction of those purchased the game. Only 0.02% of my business effectively comes from dial-up users. Seems like a pursuit hardly worthwhile, doesn’t it? [...]

I calculate how long it took the user to download the file before it completes or they cancel. Unfortunately, their actual connection type is all a guess. They could have a 100 Mbit connection somewhere in Japan that just doesn't find the right path to SolariStudios.com and downloads at 3.5 KB/sec. Nevertheless, this is the best I've got without outright asking the user, and I reckon it's accurate enough to make assumptions. After all, whether or not they are on dial-up doesn't matter, it's how fast their connection is in this particular circumstance and what they're willing to put up with. When I say "dial-up," what you should read is, "slow."

In light of this recent information, I'm beefing up Jeweltopia significantly with all sorts of new media, including fully animated and scored cutscenes. I'm going to try to drive the file-size up to around 15-20 MB and see how things change. Of course, I'll be posting a followup when that happens.

Thanks for reading!

Good reading. I wonder how do you know who's on broadband and who's on dial-up? Hope you do some test for games over 5mb size.
